Driving Safety: Best Practices That Will Save You Money

How much money does your dealership pass on to your insurance company because of vehicular accidents and damages every year?  What about the direct costs?  What could you have done with that money instead? Dollars spent on vehicle accidents not only hurt your bottom line, but also cost your dealership missed opportunities for making more money. While your employees may have met all of the legal requirements for driving, some reminders can help ensure that they are driving as safely as possible on the lot.

  1. Keep the vehicle in proper driving condition. Drivers need to ensure that all mirrors, seats, steering wheels, etc. are in a safe and comfortable driving position before pulling out of the parking space.
  2. Keep distractions to a minimum. This means no cell phones, no mp3 players, and no playing with the radio. If your dealership doesn’t have a “no cell phone when driving vehicles” policy this is a good time to implement one. Cell phone usage is a leading cause of car accidents; by eliminating their usage when driving you’re providing your employees and customers with a safer environment while minimizing risk.
  3. Obey all traffic rules. Make sure that the dealership speed limit is clearly posted for both employees and customers.  If there are stop signs, mirrors, or speed bumps on your lot, remind employees of their location and of the importance of obeying these controls.
  4. Watch those blind spots. Most dealerships have blind corners at the back of their buildings. Remind drivers of the need to stay on their side of the road, use mirrors, or stop, and honk to let others know of their presence at these corners.
  5. Drivers need to use their eyes. Scrapes and fender benders often occur when moving vehicles in and out of work areas and parking spots. Drivers need to ensure that there is adequate clearance on all sides of the vehicle. Remind them to ask a co-worker to help guide the vehicle in a crowded situation.
  6. Don’t forget about pedestrians. When customers are walking the lot, they’re not paying attention to traffic; they think they are at the mall and are looking at the shiny new cars. Drivers should be on the lookout for anyone that may step out from behind a parked vehicle.
  7. Look at the trouble spots specific to your dealership. If there is a particular area that has had a lot of accidents or near-misses, take a look at what can be done to minimize the danger in this area. Sometimes all you need is a mirror or a speed bump to make an area safer.
  8. Drive Defensively.  Do not trust other drivers and be on the lookout for other vehicles that may be speeding or not paying attention.
  9.  Avoid backing up. Drivers should back into parking spaces or pull ahead into the next parking space when possible. When exiting a stall or when having to back out of a parking space, a quick tap on the horn lets others know of their presence.
  10. Turn on the parking lot lights. Having the lights on during dusk and dark enhances visibility. Be mindful that the lights should come on earlier in the winter. A light detection system can help ensure that the lights are on only when needed.

We should remind ourselves of the proper way to drive and the rules of safe conduct when behind the wheel until it becomes second nature to us.
