Safety Checklist: Extension Cords
Safety Checklist: Extension Cords
What to Look For
Extension cords used in place of permanent electrical wiring.
Where to Look*
- Service and Parts Department: fans, heaters.
- Tool room: laptops, electrical machinery.
- Detail Area: vacuum cleaner.
- Everywhere: Look at ceiling support structures (a common place to snake cords).
Take These Actions
Either replace extension cords with permanent wiring, or move things around so machinery is connected to existing permanent wiring.
Make sure the extension cords that are properly used are in good shape and free of cuts or splices.
Why Do It
Using extension cords instead of permanent wiring is a citable offense because it violates uniform fire code. It also increases likelihood of injuries from electric shock and fire. It can also be a tripping hazard, depending on location.
*Extension cord misuse can occur anywhere extension cords are used. This list only represents common citation areas. A thorough facility examination is recommended for actual compliance. KPA does not endorse the use of extension cords.
