Holiday Safety
by Patric Timmermans
The holidays can be a hectic time of year for everyone, and safety is more important than ever as seasons change. There are always a few safety considerations to consider at the dealership during the holiday winter season. In this article, we’ll touch on a few things that will keep everyone safe during this time of year.
- With winter’s snow and ice come the highest number of slips and falls. Ensure your employees always wear appropriate footwear for the conditions outside.
- Some dealers even provide ice cleats that can slide over an employee’s shoes. Perfect for those who go in and out during treacherous conditions.
- If there is snow to be cleared off of vehicles, ensure those doing the work have adequate clothing and are physically fit enough to do the work.
- By now you should have a good snow removal plan. Make sure everyone understands the process before the big storms roll in.
- It may even be a good idea to set up a phone chain so there is good communication for those really treacherous days.
- This is a great time of year to check smoke and carbon monoxide detectors both at work and at home. As furnaces and fire places are used more there is a greater chance of a fire. And of course continue your monthly fire extinguisher inspections.
- Just like smoking, lit candles have no place in the dealership.
- Make sure the decorations in your show room are “child friendly.” Avoid decorations that have a breaking, choking or electrical hazard close to the ground.
- If you’re hosting a holiday party, keep in mind driving and alcohol. Designated drivers ensure your employees will be able to enjoy holidays in years to come.
- Just as it is important for your clients, remember you and your employees' vehicles should be ready for winter weather. People drive more in adverse conditions during this time of year.
- The holidays can be a stressful time for your employees, be mindful of external pressures during this time of year.
- And finally, about that Christmas tree. Cut root trees can be a serious fire hazard. Make sure the needles are cleaned up, and the tree is disposed of when it’s dry.
- Also keep in mind the International Fire Code prohibits cut root trees in areas where groups of people assemble unless the building has approved sprinklers. Some towns may even require a permit!
The holidays are generally a time of happiness and celebration, but they can also provide extra hazards and stress. Keep some of these pointers in mind for a safe and happy holiday season.
