Under the Immigration Control and Reform Act of 1986, all employers must have all employees hired after 1986 complete I-9 verification paperwork. Internal I-9 audits assist with regulatory compliance, and review, evaluate, and improve hiring procedures. Before starting your internal audit, you must establish procedures to ensure the audit is conducted in a non-discriminatory manner. It is illegal for employers to discriminate on the basis of race or national origin, and mishandling an internal audit can create the potential for discrimination charges. Your internal I-9 audit should be unbiased, annual and consistent.
